Certified Specialist

What does it mean when an attorney is a “certified specialist” in
criminal law?

A certified specialist is more than just an attorney who specializes in a particular area of law.  A California attorney who is certified by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization must have:

  • taken and passed an all-day written examination in criminal law, testing a significant variety of subject areas;
  • demonstrated a high level of experience in criminal law, including a requisite number of jury trials and motions;
  • been favorably evaluated by many attorneys and judges familiar with her work; and
  • fulfilled ongoing educational requirements above and beyond those mandated by the state bar for attorneys in general.

Only a small number – fewer than five percent – of attorneys who practice criminal law are certified specialists.

Jennifer Keller has been certified as a criminal law specialist since 1983.  Additionally, she chaired the commission that certifies other lawyers applying for certification, and wrote examination questions for two of the exams, which she later graded.
